Fred's career in the music business started at the age of 16. As a founding member of the New York-based group Material with Michael Beinhorn and Bill Laswell he had toured the world by the age of 18. This period included stints as a drummer with Richard Hell and the Voidoids, and Lou Reed. Later he was a member of the innovative pop group Scritti Politti where he earned his "masters degree" in the school of technological "hard knocks". From there he went on to become a record producer of some repute. Producing a diverse array of artists such as Matthew Sweet, Information Society, Lou Reed, Lloyd Cole and VAST, among others.
As a producer, Fred Maher likes to have a wide range of options at his fingertips. One glance at his résumé — which includes artists as diverse as Matthew Sweet and Ice Cube — reveals his need for versatility. That's where AMD64 technology comes in. "The dual AMD Opteron™ processor-based system has provided me with unbelievable performance and is stable as you push it to the limit," says Maher. "For me, that means more plug-ins, more virtual instruments and total stability throughout the life of the project. And that's just in 32-bit mode!"
